Classification and Treatment of Baby Burns and Scalds

Is there a safe environment in your home? It’s too late to panic when the burn happens, so parents should prepare an environment without burn and scald accidents for the baby from infancy.

What is the most vulnerable accident for babies? The answer is burn and scald. And it is almost due to the negligence of parents. Burns and scalds are caused by fire or hot water. Carelessness is the biggest cause of accidents.

Emergency treatment of baby burn and scald

When dealing with any burns and scalds, parents or family members should calm down and do all kinds of correct emergency treatment first, so as to reduce the skin damage caused by burns and scalds as much as possible. It is necessary to be admitted to the hospital when the wound area accounts for about 10-20% of the total area. The safety inspection of burn and scald can’t be judged immediately. In the case of infection, the deep tissue will be obstructed, so it is necessary to avoid unclean treatment.

The first step in the emergency treatment of burns and scalds is to cool down. When the baby is splashed with hot water, if the clothes can’t be taken off immediately, try to soak in the bathtub and take off again. Then soak the burned part with water, wash it with tap water for 30 minutes to 1 hour to cool the wound.

When the wound area is too large, the baby is easy to catch cold. It’s better to continue to cool down after a short rest. Cooling with cold water can not only delay the speed of tissue barrier caused by burn, but also have the effect of analgesia, but it is better not to apply ointment. After cooling, cover the wound area with a disinfectant cloth, clean handkerchief or gauze and send the baby to the hospital for treatment.

The weak baby needs careful care of parents to grow up healthily and happily. Parents should create a safe and comfortable environment for the baby as much as possible while providing better material conditions for the baby, and prevent the trouble in advance.

Treatment of various burns and scalds

1. Hot liquid scald

Flushing: wash or soak in cold water with flowing tap water to cool the skin rapidly. Do not put ice directly on the wound to avoid skin tissue injury.

Take off: after fully soaking the wound, carefully remove the clothes. Use scissors to help cut the clothes. Do not break blisters.

Soak: continue to soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes to relieve the pain. However, for babies with large burn areas or younger age, do not soak for too long to avoid shock caused by excessive hypothermia and delay the treatment opportunity. But when the baby is unconscious or can’t wake up, it’s time to stop soaking and send him to the hospital.

Cover: cover the wound with the clean bedsheet, cloth sheet or gauze. Do not apply external medicine or prescription arbitrarily to avoid infection of the wound.

Send: even if the baby is only slightly scalded, it is better to go to the hospital.

2. Chemical burns

Regardless of the pH, wash the injured area with running tap water immediately after the injury for at least 60 minutes.

Never immerse the injured part of your baby in the water, because the diffusion of chemicals can easily cause more serious injuries.

If the eyes are affected, the baby’s eyes should be opened and washed with plenty of water for 2 hours, and then sent to a doctor for treatment.

3. Contact scald

The depth of injury is related to temperature and contact time. Low temperature but long contact time can also cause deep wounds.

If the skin is red or has blisters, it needs to go through the process of flushing and soaking, and then send the baby to a doctor for treatment.

If the skin is burnt black or white as wax, it is a sign of deep burn. Send the baby to a doctor for treatment without flushing or soaking.

4. Flame burn

Stop: when the baby is on fire, wrap him with a quilt or cloth sheet. At this time, do not let the baby run, so as not to promote the fire.

Down: lie down with the hands over the face.

Rolling: rolling after lying down or only covering the fire with a large cloth towel.

Cooling: after the fire is extinguished, it shall be treated according to the hot liquid scald treatment method.

5. Electric burn

Cut off the power supply or remove the wires with insulator first. When the baby loses consciousness, first check the breath and heartbeat. If it stops, perform artificial cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately and get to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

Generally speaking, the degree of injury after electric burn is relatively deep, and the injury is mostly in the body. It is not necessary to go through the process of flushing and soaking but directly send the baby to a doctor for treatment. However, if the clothes are burned by fire, treat in the way of flame burn.
