5 Main Points for Newborn Baby Feeding

    by Emma W. August 7, 2019
    written by Emma W.

The newborns are delicate and tender. Their feeding is quite exquisite. Do you know the reason behind these feeding points?

The function of the digestive and metabolic organs of newborns is immature and tender, but they can digest and metabolize breast milk from the moment they are born. The digestive and metabolic functions of babies tend to mature with age. Therefore, we need to carry out reasonable nutritional feeding according to the characteristics of digestion and metabolism of babies, to meet the needs of the growth and development of babies.

    1. Why are breast-fed babies more likely to be hungry?

Reason: Gastric emptying time varies with food types. For example, water emptying time is 1-1.5 hours, breast milk 2-3 hours, milk 3-4 hours, and various nutrients contained in breast milk are most easily digested and absorbed, so breastfed babies are hungry fast.

Method: Breast-fed babies are fed at shorter intervals than powdered milk-fed babies.

    • Why not make formula as thick as possible?

Reason: After food is absorbed in the intestine, most of the metabolic waste is discharged from the body through the kidney. However, the function of the kidney in infants and young children are still immature, and the ability to regulate the metabolism of nutrients is limited. If the osmotic pressure of food and the solute load of the kidney are too high, it will cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and other symptoms.

Method: When preparing formula milk for babies, it should be in strict conformity with instructions. Don’t make it too concentrated in order to increase nutrition, because the higher the concentration, the less water, the higher the solute load in the kidney, and the heavier the burden of the kidney. Parents can try the baby formula maker. It can produce a good cup of milk in a short time according to the set temperature, concentration and volume accurately. Besides, the high protein and mineral content in fresh milk will increase the solute load of the kidney, so don’t let babies aged within 2 years old drink fresh milk.

    • Why newborn babies eat little?

Reason: The stomach capacity of babies is small. The stomach capacity of newborn babies is 30-35 ml, 100 ml at 3 months, 250 ml at 1 year old and 500-600 ml at 3 years old.

Method: When feeding the baby, the amount of milk and food should not be too much each time. The best way to judge if a baby is eating enough is to see how his height and weight are growing, whether they are growing continuously and within the normal range.

    • Why newborn babies always spitting up?

Reason: The development of esophageal wall muscles and elastic fibers in infancy is poor. The stomach is horizontal. The development of cardiac sphincter at the junction of esophagus and stomach is also imperfect. Spitting up and vomiting milk are prone to occur after breastfeeding, especially when the baby swallows more air during breastfeeding.

Method: To avoid spitting up and vomiting milk, mothers can hold the baby upright after feeding, let him lie on the mother’s shoulder, and then gently pat the baby’s back to make the swallowed air discharged.

    • Why can’t rice flour be fed to babies aged within 4 months?

Reason: Some digestive enzymes secreted insufficiently in infancy. At birth, pepsin and trypsin have been adequately secreted and can meet the needs of protein digestion; the digestive absorption rate of fat is slightly lower, 80%-85%; the amylase responsible for digestion of cereals will not begin to secrete until after 4-6 months.

Method: Starch-containing cereals such as rice flour should be added 4-6 months after birth.
