How to Choose Bottles and Nipples for Newborns

    by Emma W. September 25, 2019
    written by Emma W.

The most important thing for newborn babies is to eat. Whether they are artificially or breastfed, they will need bottles and nipples. So how to choose?

    How to Choose Baby Bottles?

    1. Material of bottles

Baby bottles on the market can be divided into PC bottles, PP bottles, glass bottles and all-silicone bottles according to the raw materials.

    (1) PC bottles and PP bottles are cheap, but they take a relatively short time and are easy to yellowing and deformation.

    (2) Glass bottles are relatively moderate in price, but still more expensive than PC bottles and PP bottles. 200 ml glass bottles are recommended.

    (3) Silicone bottles are expensive, but their excellent handle and material are not comparable to other bottles.

    2. Bottle Style

    • Traditional Straight-bodied Bottle

This is probably the most economical and recyclable one.

    • Curved Recyclable Bottle

The top of the bottle has a 45-degree bending design, which makes it easier and more comfortable to feed the baby upright.

    • Disposable bottle

The bottle consists of two parts: a hard rubber bottle and a disposable soft rubber nipple that can be inserted into the bottle.

    • Bubbleless bottle

This recyclable bottle is the best choice for babies who are susceptible to inhalation of gases and abdominal pain and do not like disposable bottles.

    • Hand-free bottles

The bottle is convenient for parents of twins or multiple babies because it can be attached to a car seat or baby cart. This kind of bottle can not be used frequently, because hand-feeding is very important for promoting parent-child relationship and baby development.

    • Cavity bottle

The bottle has an independent component that can pre-measure the amount of milk powder and water. This kind of bottle is most suitable for use when going out or traveling.

    • Anti-flatulence bottle

This kind of bottle can adjust the internal pressure according to the amount of milk and effectively reduce the problems of the infant’s flatulence, vomiting and belching caused by inhaling too much air. Newborn babies couldn’t use anti-flatulence bottles yet.

    How to Choose Nipples?

There are many kinds of baby nipples on the market. According to the material, they can be divided into latex nipples (rubber color) and silicone nipples (transparent color). The special nipples for bottles can also be divided into round and emulation. The nipple holes can be divided into round holes, cross holes or Y-shaped holes and other different functional designs.

    1. Style

Round-hole (S): Suitable for newborns who can’t control their milk intake.

Round Hole (M): Suitable for babies aged 2 to 7 months and felt a small size is time-consuming. The number of sucking times when using this nipple is very close to breastfeeding.

Round Hole (L): Suitable for babies over 7 months or lighter babies who feel the above two kinds of nipples is time-consuming.

Y-shaped hole: Suitable for babies who can control their milk intake and play while drinking.

Cross-shaped hole: Suitable for drinking fruit juice, rice flour or other coarse drinks, can also be used to drink milk.

    2. Rate of flow

Low flow: less than 3 months.

    Medium flow: 3-6 months.

    High flow rate: 6-9 months.
